Harpo/Oprah. Two Sides of a Mirror?

Rae as Squeak in 1985 film
The Color Purple with Harpo
Oprah received an Oscar nomination
for her performance as
Sofia
I read this interview this morning from the Daily Mail site.
"Oprah Winfrey's former Color Purple co-star Rae Dawn Chong has launched a scathing attack on the talk show host.Speaking on internet radio show Matty P's Radio Happy Hour, the Canadian actress, 52, drops the N-word and criticises the media mogul's weight and accuses her of being 'power-hungry'.
Rae, who has mixed Chinese, European and Afro-Canadian heritage, claims Oprah, 59, would have been a 'house n**ger' if she had lived before the emancipation of slaves."
Interesting interview.
I love both of these women and recently put some money into
Rae Dawn Chong's Indigogo campaign to get her excellent TV show made.
I'm sure there is relevant arguments on both sides of this coin.
One thing I noticed was Rae played Harpo's girlfriend in the movie

The Color Purple and Harpo is Oprah spelled backwards, as most people would be aware from watching her TV show, kind of a Yin/Yang situation right there;-)
I'm going to have to watch
The Color Purple again.
Despite insisting she got on well with Oprah during the making of the Alice Walker film adaptation, her opinion changed when they made Commando, which was released the same year as
The Color Purple.
Fans of the film will know Oprah played feisty Sofia in the film, while Rae played Squeak - the girlfriend of Sofia's husband Harpo (William E Pugh)

  1. Harpo, Oprah: a good one!

I'd heard about this, but hadn't read much about it.
